Phillip Adams BalletLab and Yellow Wheel invite you to experience Paradise!

Paradise is a re-proposal of previous work Pacific by PABL Artistic Director, Phillip Adams made for Brazilian Ballet Company, Companhia de Ballet da Cidade de Niterói in 2016. For Paradise, Adams has transferred this work onto the 20 young dancers of pre-professional dance company Yellow Wheel. Inspired by childhood memories growing up in Papua New Guinea, 60s and 70s television and the cultural and social influences of making the original work in Niteroi, Brazil, Paradise evokes a world of imagined ceremony, pageantry and procession all expressed through an original and vibrant choreography adapted for an Australian setting. The work pays homage to a variety of influences spanning a number of decades and across multiple continents creating a celebratory new dance work performed to classical music by Richard Strauss.

A Short Film by Pippa Samaya

In April 2018 Yellow Wheel and The National Youth Dance Company of Scotland collided for eight days to create and present NEO.

Dance film maker Pippa Samaya spent time with us in the studio and at the performance to create a beautiful snap shot of our time together. Pippa and Adam have been working together since 2014, catching memorable moments of youth dance practice.

Our thanks to Creative Victoria, Creative Scotland, Time To Shine, Auspicious Arts Projects, Lucy Guerin Inc & Transit Dance for their support!

The People's Dance on Film

In October 2017 Yellow Wheel premiered The People's Dance at Chunky Move.

The work was inspired by a research assignment undertook by the dancers, during which they interviewed over 50 people from all over the world about what kind of work they would make if put in the choreographer's chair.

Special thanks to The Besen Family Foundation, Lucy Guerin Inc, Chunky Move and Transit Dance for their support of the project.

“You may write me down in history
With your bitter twisted lies,
You may tread me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I rise”

Maya Angelou

Inspired by the words of Maya Angelou, the dancers guide us through a landscape of chaos and protest, boldly navigating the diverging paths present in our daily lives. We encounter embodiments of dictators, passionate protesters and moments of rebellion.

Conflicting and disparate, meets bold and united in one space as we pursue the uplifting mantra of: ‘But still, like dust, I rise.’

NEO-DIGITAL NATIVE choreographed by Adam Wheeler & Dancers

Neo Digital Native began with the pairing of dancers from Australia and Scotland, exchanging imagery of their lives over social media, and culminated in 8 days of collision to present a work that is continually evolving, without any idea of where it will end.

Yellow Wheel & The National Youth Dance Company of Scotland acknowledge the generous support from Creative Victoria, Creative Scotland, Lucy Guerin Inc and Transit Dance.

Yellow Wheel presents The People's Dance

Yellow Wheel has taken it to the streets to find out what kind of dance works the people of Melbourne would make if they were put in the choreographer's chair.

The People's Dance challenges how we exist with dance, how we make it and why we make it. A global perspective of identity through dance.

Inspired by French street artist JR and his project Inside Out Project, The People's Dance is a 60-minute interactive, immersive experience, housed at Chunky Move this October.

When: October 12-14 7:30pm + 2pm Matinee October 14
