Example Example Tickets On Sale!

Yellow Wheel presents Example Example, a new double-bill of contemporary dance works, choreographed by Yellow Wheel alumni Kyall Shanks and Arabella Frahn-Starkie.

In Reference to the PDF
Kyall's work is a summary and representation of his and Company 2’s time spent together this year. A short demonstration of the play and investigations in the studio, kept alive by the company members through the use of an infamous PDF while Kyall was overseas.

Close Copy
Close Copy by Arabella Frahn-Starkie combines dance and photographic practice. It is comparison and analysis in a dream state. It is multiple versions of a single memory. It is a genuine artefact that is both unchanging, and moving forward with the momentum of a body twisting and flailing.

Friday November 23rd / 7:00pm
Saturday November 24th / 2:00pm & 7:00pm
Temperance Hall
199 Napier Street, South Melbourne

2019 Auditions

We are seeking young movers aged 14+ to work with us in 2019!

Yellow Wheel is a Melbourne-based dance company that specialises in creating work with young people. In 2019 we are offering two programs, Company One and Company Two, which both include exciting contemporary dance performance and training opportunities. Auditions are taking place in December, and interested dancers are asked to register on the website before attending.

Yellow Wheel, alongside Lucy Guerin Inc, is in residence at the brand new WXYZ Studios in North Melbourne. Company members will be working in the thick of the industry, working with and sharing space with leading professionals, and performing in some of Melbourne’s most exciting festivals.

New Artistic and Associate Directors!

Yellow Wheel is very excited to announce its new Artistic Director, Joshua Lowe, and Associate Director, Kyall Shanks!

Yellow Wheel was founded in 2012 by Artistic Director Adam Wheeler. In August this year Adam relocated to Launceston to take up the position of Artistic Director of Tasdance. Throughout 2019 he will be supporting Yellow Wheel as Artistic Executive.

Joshua and Kyall both have a long history with Yellow Wheel. Joshua has been the Company Manager since 2012 and choreographed for I Came Here To Dance Once (2014) and The Golden Age (2015). Kyall began a company member in 2013, then moving into the role of Artistic Associate in 2016. He co-choreographed Quark (2016) alongside Adam, and is choreographing for Company Two this year.

Joshua has also been the Artistic Director of Hobart’s youth dance company DRILL since 2007, and will continue in this role alongside Yellow Wheel. Working at the helm of both companies will allow new opportunities for connection and collaboration between Tasmania and Victoria.

As Melbourne’s pre-professional contemporary dance company, Yellow Wheel will continue to offer exceptional training and performance opportunities for young people and emerging artists. We are very excited to enter a new phase for the company and can’t wait to share news on our 2019 program with you all soon!

Paradise is Coming!

Phillip Adams BalletLab and Yellow Wheel invite you to experience Paradise!

Paradise is a re-proposal of previous work Pacific by PABL Artistic Director, Phillip Adams made for Brazilian Ballet Company, Companhia de Ballet da Cidade de Niterói in 2016. For Paradise, Adams has transferred this work onto the 20 young dancers of pre-professional dance company Yellow Wheel. Inspired by childhood memories growing up in Papua New Guinea, 60s and 70s television and the cultural and social influences of making the original work in Niteroi, Brazil, Paradise evokes a world of imagined ceremony, pageantry and procession all expressed through an original and vibrant choreography adapted for an Australian setting. The work pays homage to a variety of influences spanning a number of decades and across multiple continents creating a celebratory new dance work performed to classical music by Richard Strauss.

Trip The Light 2018

Formerly known as SHOWROOM, Trip The Light is Yellow Wheel's celebrated dancer's choreographic season.

Each year selected dancers from the company take on the challenge of making their own works mentored by Adam. Fourteen new dance works will be presented in a multi-space experience at Transit Dance, Kensington.

Choreographers: Abigail Benham-Bannon, Anna Tolotchkov, Charlie Lloyd, Claudia Willimann, Eiren Chamley, Elly Tew, Emily Laurson, Hannah Friebel, Luke Romero, Maddi Cushion, Natalie Kwan, Rachel Mackie, Rachel Owens, Walter Wolffs

A Short Film by Pippa Samaya

In April 2018 Yellow Wheel and The National Youth Dance Company of Scotland collided for eight days to create and present NEO.

Dance film maker Pippa Samaya spent time with us in the studio and at the performance to create a beautiful snap shot of our time together. Pippa and Adam have been working together since 2014, catching memorable moments of youth dance practice.

Our thanks to Creative Victoria, Creative Scotland, Time To Shine, Auspicious Arts Projects, Lucy Guerin Inc & Transit Dance for their support!

The People's Dance on Film

In October 2017 Yellow Wheel premiered The People's Dance at Chunky Move.

The work was inspired by a research assignment undertook by the dancers, during which they interviewed over 50 people from all over the world about what kind of work they would make if put in the choreographer's chair.

Special thanks to The Besen Family Foundation, Lucy Guerin Inc, Chunky Move and Transit Dance for their support of the project.

I THINK MY MOTHER IS A ROBOT choreographed by Adam Wheeler & Dancers (Yellow Wheel)

What happens when Generation Z interviews their parents about the way they perceive the world as children? Delve into a conversation of humorous cross-generational insights with the dancers, featuring their parents.

DI-VER-GENT choreographed by Anna Kenrick (NYDCS)

“You may write me down in history
With your bitter twisted lies,
You may tread me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I rise”

Maya Angelou

Inspired by the words of Maya Angelou, the dancers guide us through a landscape of chaos and protest, boldly navigating the diverging paths present in our daily lives. We encounter embodiments of dictators, passionate protesters and moments of rebellion.

Conflicting and disparate, meets bold and united in one space as we pursue the uplifting mantra of: ‘But still, like dust, I rise.’

NEO-DIGITAL NATIVE choreographed by Adam Wheeler & Dancers

Neo Digital Native began with the pairing of dancers from Australia and Scotland, exchanging imagery of their lives over social media, and culminated in 8 days of collision to present a work that is continually evolving, without any idea of where it will end.

Yellow Wheel & The National Youth Dance Company of Scotland acknowledge the generous support from Creative Victoria, Creative Scotland, Lucy Guerin Inc and Transit Dance.
