Yellow Wheel
Yellow Wheel, established in Melbourne in 2012, is an Australian dance company specialising in working with young people and emerging artists. The current company model shifts year to year based off of the needs of the annual emerging artists we engage with. Given the growing complexity of societal shifts, trends and the human experience, the company exists to support young people to find their own voice, fire and individuality within this growing chaos. Whilst maintaining this ethos, Yellow Wheel connects emerging artists with practicing professionals and supports them to understand the realism of the proffesional industry they’re about to enter.
Yellow Wheel is directed by Kyall Shanks (VARYING CONTEXTS: Chunky Move, Tasdance, Opera Australia, Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures, City of Melbourne, Restless Dance Theatre, Antony Hamilton Projects, Alisdair Macindoe and more) and supported by Independent Artist Jacqui Maida. K&J are working nearly entirely voluntarily to support the next generation of dance artists to understand how dance and movement can be utilized to furhter understand the human experience through the varying lenses of practitioner, performer or viewer.
Whilst acknowledging the incredible benefits dance training has to our bodies and the professional industries, we believe the benefits dance can offer people extend beyond this. When an individual begins learning about their body, and their cause and effect relationship to the space and world around them, it develops empathy, awareness and understanding. Dance helps us understand our relationship to the world around us, and how we want to exist within that as humans.
